Hosts England has been beaten by India in the curtain-raiser for this year’s Women’s World Cup in Derby.
India’s batsman set England an imposing 282 to win – leaving England needing the highest run chase in World Cup history if they were to win.
Their reply stuttered somewhat, but Fran Wilson smashed 81 from just 75 balls to give them a sniff of victory.
Ultimately tough, the total and India’s impressive work in the field proved too strong as they won by 35 runs.
Heather Knight, English captain said, “We obviously did not start the way we wanted to, and then we were always struggling uphill. That is something we will have to look at.”
